چکیده

The antibiotic susceptibility test was carried out on 103 Staphylococcus aureus and 136 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) strains. Only 35 of the isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics tested, while the remaining 204 isolates were resistant at least to one of the antibiotics. Among staphylococci, 18 isolates of S. aureus and 31 isolates of CNS were found phenotypically resistant to methicillin and these isolates were also resistant to penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxycillin and cloxacillin. Out of 68 S. aureus strains 55.9% were β-lactamase producers. β-lactamase producer isolates were 21.1% resistant to methicillin, but were 100% susceptible to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid and 97.4% susceptible to ampicillin/sulbactam. The differences observed in the efficacy of the antibiotics tested against staphylococci show that the antibiotic susceptibility tests should be performed together with the identification of the bacterial agents.

A study of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from bovine mastitis for the presence of penicillin and methicillin resistance-encoding genes in the north west of Iran

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are often associated with bovine mastitis and may be resistant to antimicrobial therapy. The aim of the current study was to investigate the presence of blaZ (responsible for penicillin resistance) and mecA (responsible for methicillin resistance) genes among 108 CoNS belonging to 9 different species isolated from bovine mastitis in seven dairy herds (H1-...

Antibiotic Susceptibility and Plasmid Profiles of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Bovine Subclinical Mastitis in Tabriz, Iran

ABSTRACT        Background and Objectives: Mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a widely distributed disease in cattle, goats and sheep. The infection is often subclinical in cattle, leading to reduced milk production and quality, but acute catarrhal or even gangrenous inflammation may also occur. The aim of this study was to investigate resistance of S. au...

Characteristics of staphylococci isolated from clinical and subclinical mastitis cows in Shahrekord, Iran

Staphylococci isolated from 98 mastitic cow’s milk samples were analyzed for the production of alpha, beta and delta-hemolysin on sheep, bovine and horse red blood cells and in vitro susceptibility to several antimicrobial agents. Out of a total of 18 isolated strains, 100% demonstrated hemolytic activity either alone or in combined forms. Among 8 isolates of S. aureus 3 isolates produced α/β an...

Prevalence and molecular mechanism of macrolide and lincosamide resistance in staphylococci isolated from subclinical bovine mastitis in Turkey.

Macrolide and lincosamide (ML) resistance and the related resistance genes of staphylococci were assessed from cases of bovine subclinical mastitis. Of the 104 Staphylococcus aureus and 62 coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) isolates, 26 (25%) and 12 (19.4%) were resistant to ML, respectively. While constitutive ML resistance phenotype accounted for 15.4% (16/104) of S. aureus and 8.1% (5/...

Coagulase-negative staphylococci as cause of bovine mastitis- not so different from Staphylococcus aureus?

In this review of the literature, mastitis-causing coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) and Staphylococcus aureus are compared. Staphylococci are the bacteria most commonly isolated from bovine mastitis, and CNS are now predominant over S. aureus in most countries. CNS include various species, but only a few prevail in bovine mastitis. S. aureus can cause clinical mastitis, but often causes s...
